Conversion kits are an easy and economical way to convert your current bike into an e-bike and they have grown in popularity over the past few years. At Electroheads we have tested a lot of e-bikes and e-bike conversion kits so we were really intrigued to test the the Pikaboost2 Powerful Edition by Livall. It's lightweight and easy to install and we were very interested to see whether this small bit of kit is also mighty...so keep reading to find out what we thought!

Components and build quality:
I like the design of the Livall - it’s an all in one kit meaning that the motor and battery are combined into one single unit which not only makes it sleek, but self-contained and easy to install. This, combined with the fact that it's only 3kg, means that it doesn't dramatically alter the feeling of your current bike like some other kits do.
The kit also uses regenerative braking to recharge the battery as you cycle. This technology converts kinetic energy from braking into energy that can be fed back into the battery. This is great for keeping your battery life topped up while you are out.
Performance and handling:
The kit can assist you up to speeds of 15.5mph and outputs power based on how fast you pedal: the faster you pedal, the more assistance it will give you. As well as the standard assist mode the Powerful Edition also comes with Cruise and Workout mode.
In Cruise mode there is no need to pedal, once you have started moving over 5km/h. This was a pretty cool feature but I don’t think that this is necessarily where the kit excels. It can be controlled by the app or the wireless remote but it is also not available in all countries subject to different road laws.
Workout mode was definitely my favorite aspect of this kit, and it’s something that I have never been offered on other conversion kits. In this mode, every pedal stroke becomes a challenge because the motor creates resistance! This meant that, when I wanted to, I could really feel a burn through my legs and get a workout in on the way home from work. Every pedal in this mode also generates energy that is stored in the kit’s battery.
Like with all friction systems, the Pikaboost2 Lite is victim to dropping traction in wet conditions. It didn’t render the kit entirely unusable in wet conditions but I definitely felt some slippage and was not getting as much assist as I was in the dry.
Safety and security:
The motor automatically shuts off when it detects that the bike has tilted more than 30 degrees. If it detects that the bike has tilted more than 60 degrees then it will send an SOS alter to your emergency contact. That’s pretty smart. It also means that if the worst should happen and you do come off your bike then the motor will cut out, preventing any further damage to you or your bike.
The integrated rear LED light is there to keep you safe and make sure that you can be seen in the dark, which for me is a nonnegotiable because the fitting of this kit doesn't leave room for any other rear bike lights.
