Best conversion kits in Canada | Spring 2026

26 June 2026Honey Meeson

If you want an electric bike, but you don't want to get rid of your non-electric bike, then an e-bike conversion kit might just be what you're looking for. Switching to electric can help you to go further, tackle hills, and enhance your love of cycling. That’s why we've compiled a list of our top choices of conversion kits for 2026.

We've been reviewing electric bikes for six years, reviewing hundreds of models in that time - including dozens of conversion kits. And our mission is to help you find the right model for your particular needs.

So here is our selection of the best kits to electrify your bike…

BAFANG, $596.99

Bafang makes the motors for so many e-bike brands out there so it only makes sense that they also have their own conversion kit!

Pros:

  • Strong torque
  • Effective hill performance
  • Durable

Cons:

  • Tricky installation
  • Not widely compatible

The BAFANG kit is a 750W mid-drive motor that integrates with bottom brackets 68-73mm, 100mm, and 120mm lengths and 33.5-36mm inner diameters, adhering to JIS norms. A mid-drive motor is the optimal position for power delivery as it keeps your bike’s centre of gravity low and centralised and delivers power evenly from the centre of the bike.

It also comes with a thumb throttle so you can electrify your bike with throttle power not just pedal assist!

You can choose to purchase this kit without the battery that they sell and chose to use one of your own picking as the kit is widely compatible with other batteries. The battery that BAFANG provide does fit into the rear rack neatly and you can select the power capacity of your battery which will affect the range that the kit provides.

Kamingo, $549.00

Kamingo is the smallest conversion kit that we have ever come across at Electroheads!  Kamingo conversion kit offers you electrification in just 2.3kg!

Pros:

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Easy to install and remove
  • Road legal motor (250W continuous) can peak at 750W

Cons:

  • Not compatible with rear mud guards
  • Slight slippage in wet conditions

The kit uses a friction drive motor to power your classic bike. So a small roller presses gently against the rear tyre and when the motor spins, it drives the wheel forward. It’s super easy to install: you just strap it onto the back of your seatpost!

The battery is separate and designed to look like a water bottle so it sits neatly in your bottle cage. The battery itself is 266 watt-hours, and it uses EV-grade cells which is the same class used in electric vehicles and premium e-bikes.

While Kamingo claims that the kit has a range of up to 55 miles most riders will see closer to 20 to 30 miles. It all of course depends on terrain, rider weight, and assist level. Now this kit isn’t trying to turn your bike into a powerhouse, its aim is to give you a subtle but capable amount of electric assist and it does just that. I did find that there was a little bit of slippage when the roads and surfaces became wet but Kamingo say that they have made improvements to solve this issue on more recent models.

The bottle-style battery means that if you lock your bike up in public then you can take it with you and reduce the risk of your bike being stolen. Its bottle-style also means that it is not too cumbersome to carry around with you.

INPAITOO, $643.87

The INPAITOO kit is built for bikes with 20” wheels so that might include city bikes or folding bikes - whatever it is, if it has 20” wheels then this kit is for you!

Pros:

  • Powerful 1000W motor
  • Can convert 20” wheeled bikes
  • Good speed

Cons:

  • Installation may be tricky
  • Battery sold separately

The kit contains almost everything that you need without having to buy parts separately but it does not come with a battery. It is compatible with standard e-bike battery kits so that’s not too hard to source and of course the battery that you pick will determine the range that your new ebike has. It does come with a simple LCD display which shows speed, battery level, range, etc.

The back wheel comes with a 1000W motor built into it. INPAITOO say that it is very easy to install which I'm sure it is if you have some prior bike building experience but as a novice when it comes to bike building I would say set aside maybe half a day to go through everything and set this powerhouse up properly. The motor can assist you up to around 23-27mph depending on rider weight and terrain.

Golden Motor, from $414.99

The conversion kit by Golden Motor is the most customisable kit on this list.

Pros:

  • Customisable
  • Throttle
  • Range of wheel sizes

Cons:

  • Lots of parts sold separately

Catering to bikes with 16” - 26” wheels and offering front wheel, back wheel, and rear cassette kits this is for those who are looking for something a bit different, or something very specific. The motors are 500W continuous and can peak at 750W so you definitely feel like you are getting a good level of assist while riding on the flats and a fair level of assist up hills.

I like that this kit also comes with the choice of a thumb or twist throttle because I like to cruise along longer roads in both the city and countryside. It also comes with power brake levers for regenerative braking which is great if you live in a hilly area or city because more braking means more range which is always a good thing! The option of Pedal Assist is, however, an additional extra, not included as standard.

Range is of course determined by the battery you choose which is an additional extra which you can purchase from Golden Motor. Golden Motor does offer a lot of additional extras to go with the kit. For example, an LCD isn’t included in the starting price and is offered as an additional extra. They also offer a USB cable for programming the motor to set voltage, speed, power, etc.

So overall this kit is great if you are looking for something very customisable with good power and response.

Kirbebike - $725.00

The Kirbebike kit is a front wheel conversion kit that is super easy to install and all you need is included as standard.

Pros:

  • Range of wheel sizes
  • Battery included
  • Easy to install

Cons:

  • Front wheel motor means a less natural riding feel
  • Less powerful motor than other kits

But what’s different about front wheel hub motors from rear wheel motors? Front wheel motors are sometimes easier to install as they don't interfere with your existing gearing and drivechain. They also feel like you are being pulled forward rather than boosted from behind but that isn’t necessarily ‘better’ or ‘worse’ - it more comes down to a matter of preference. I would say though that front wheel motors are better on flat terrain and for casual riding and not trail and mountain riding as sometimes the front wheel can spin out on loose gravel as all of your weight is concentrated on the rear of the bike.

Anyway, onto the Kirbebike kit itself!

This kit is compatible with a range of wheel sizes all the way from 20” - 29” wheels. It can reach a top speed of 20mph and has a range of up to 44miles depending on which battery you choose (36V15Ah or 48V20Ah).

The motor is a 250W motor which doesn’t sound like a lot when some of the other motors on this list go up to 1000W but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend much more power for a front wheel motor as the 250W already feels pretty punchy.

This is one of the easier kits to install as it is only a front wheel conversion so I would say that even inexperienced bike builders would only need an hour at most to convert their bike.

One of the things I really like about this kit is that it is discreet. The motors on some other conversion kits are quite big and therefore quite eyecatching but with this kit you could lock your new ebike up in public without worrying that it was going to attract lots of unwanted attention.
