Expert verdict:
“The assist is lovely…it's very smooth”. Our expert reviewer Eilis really liked riding the Hygge Virum. A lot of the time when we come across folding bikes their motors are slightly less powerful or the wheels are much smaller to keep the bike light and compact but the Virum manages to be more than your average folding commuter bike and offers great power and a lovely riding feel. It is great for commuting but could also take you further.

Components and build quality:
The Hygge Virum is a no-nonsense folding electric bike that can get you from A to B without being too cumbersome. It folds down small enough for it to fit under your desk at work, under the luggage rack on a train, or under a table at the pub! The seatpost battery design keeps the frame of this looking bike sleek and feeling lightweight.

The motor is in the rear wheel, powering you from behind and helping you to build speed pretty quick when you are using the top level of assist. It takes about half a turn of the pedals for the power to kick in but once it does it is definitely powerful.

Performance and handling:
The bike folds down in three steps and is really easy to fold. It is also fairly lightweight at 18kg meaning that you could carry it upstairs either in public on your commute, or inside if you live on the second or third floor. It folds down pretty small too which makes it easy to store inside or pop in the boot of your car as a companion for your weekend adventures.
The wheels are bigger than on a lot of folding bikes at 20inches. These bigger wheels really impact the handling of this bike when you are riding as they give you a much better sense of control as you turn. For a bike without suspension they also work to better mitigate the impact of uneven road surfaces.
The Virum comes with a cadence sensor which doesn't give the same natural feeling of assist that a torque sensor does but it means power on demand. And, maybe to you more importantly, a cadence sensor is better at powering you uphill as it outputs the max power that it can for the level of assist that you are in.
Safety and security:
The removable seatpost battery means that you can take it with you should you need to lock your bike in public, ultimately making it less of a target for thieves. It also makes charging simpler as you can take the battery inside.
Hydraulic brakes are also there to keep you safe as they give you reliable stopping power and the integrated lighting system is there to make sure that you can see and be seen on the roads.
